Roofing Shingles Coverage
Taking the time to work out the roofing shingles coverage is one of the first jobs that you will need to do when replacing the shingles on your roof. It is important that you work this out properly to make sure that you do not purchase substantially more material than you actually need or on the flip side to prevent getting half way through the job only to realize that you have not purchased enough. Making the correct calculations for your roofing shingles coverage will without a doubt save you some time and trouble. When you are repairing, replacing or installing new roofing shingles it is always important to get your self organized before you start work on the job ahead.
It will be helpful for you to know beforehand which type of roofing shingles you will be using for your project. This is because you will be able to take a look at the box and find out exactly how many shingles there are per bundle and how much coverage each box or bundle will provide. Knowing this in advance will enable you to calculate exactly how many boxes you will need to purchase once you have worked out the area of your roof. The shingles are usually sold in squares with three or four bundles within each square. A square will provide 100 square feet of coverage for your roof. If the type that you will be purchasing is sold in squares you should remember that for every 100 square foot of roof area you will need to buy one square of roofing shingles.
To work out how much shingle coverage you will need you will have to work out the area of your roof. You can work out the approximate area by multiplying the length of the roof by the width. You may also need to figure out your cap shingles but this will not be the case if you have ridge venting as this will not allow for capping. It is always recommended to purchase a little more material than you calculated for to allow for cut-offs and mistakes. So for example if the area of your roof worked out at 2200 square feet you should purchase 23 squares of roofing shingles which will give you an extra 100 square feet of material to work with.
Architectural 300lb dimensional shingles are the most common to be installed onto new roofs and are in most instances sold in bundles of three per square. When you have worked out your roofing shingles coverage and make your way to purchase what you require it is worth making sure that all of the roofing shingles that you purchase come from the same batch lot by the manufacturer. This is because if you get your roofing shingles from different batch lots you many notice some slight differences in color between the different batches.
